Chitosan

Chitosan is a very simple substance and around for ages.

It comes from chitin, a polysaccharide found in the exoskeletons of crustaceans.

Processing involves removing the shells from shellfish such as shrimp, lobster, and crabs. Then we turn the shells into a pulverous powder by grinding. This powder is then deacetylated, or stripped of specific chemical groups that allow the compound to actively "soak up fats."

Past uses include the process of detoxifying water. It was simply spread over the surface of water, where it would immediately absorb any toxic substances such as greases, oils, or dangerous heavy metals. The process is so complete that a scum forms over the surface of water and then easily removed.

For this reason, Chitosan is extremely popular all over the world in water purification plants. The present form of Chitosan is the main ingredient in many weight loss supplements

How It Works

Let's look at exactly what Chitosan is and how we use it for weight loss.

Basically Chitosan is a special fiber which is able to "soak up" or absorb anywhere from six to ten times its weight in fat and oils. In substance, it is chemically similar to the plant fiber, cellulose.

However, Chitosan is able to significantly bind with fat molecules and convert them into a form the human body does not absorb. It affects the fat prior to it reaching the stomach and thus the fat never has a chance to be metabolized. It prevents the absorption and storage of fat by converting into a gel that "traps" the fat. It creates a "grease ball" from this excess fat, that is too large to be absorbed by the body.

So, it becomes an inert substance excreted in the stool.

Chitosan fiber is unlike other fibers in that it carries a positive ionic charge. Since lipids, fats, and bile acids all possess negative charges, there is a chemical bond between the two and thus they attract naturally to one another. This unique ability is what makes Chitosan so remarkable.

Gymnema Extract

Gymnema sylvestre is a woody climbing plant that grows in the tropical forests of central and southern India. The leaves lamina is ovate, elliptic or ovate-lanceolate, with both surfaces pubescent.

The flowers are small bell-shaped yellow color. The leaves of gurmar have medicinal use for its unique property to directly mask the tongue's ability to taste sweet foods and at the same time suppress glucose absorption from the intestine. This is the reason it is known in Hindi as gurmar, or "destroyer of sugar."

Historically, Gymnema sylvestre treats conditions ranging from malaria to snake bites. Sushruta, the classic book on Ayurveda, describes Gymnema. sylvestre, as a destroyer of 'Madhumeha' (glycosuria) and other urinary disorders.

This herb has been given the name of 'gur-mar' meaning 'sugar-destroying,' because of its property of abolishing the taste of sugar and "mesbasringi" meaning 'ram's horn' with relation to the shape of its fruits. Indians use it as a remedy against this condition with success.

The principle active ingredient is Gymnemic acid. The other compounds found are Calcium oxalate, anthraquinone compound, Tartaric acid, cellulose, ash, quercitol (but there is no tannin.) On further study, when lab workers purify and analyze Gymnemic acid further, they found it does not possess any anti-sacaharine properties; it was not a glucoside.

The hypoglycemic extract of Gymnema sylvestris brings about blood glucose homeostasis, which in turn prevents increased glycosylation of proteins. This reverses the onset of changes leading to micro and macroangiopathy.

Control of Diabetes mellitus and the associated complications result through the revival or regeneration of the insulin, producing beta-cells in the islets of langerhans.

The glucose-like molecules in Gurmar known as the Gymnemic acid fills the receptor locations in the absorptive external layers of the intestine, thereby preventing the intestine from absorbing the sugar molecules. Due to the change in the absorption level of sugar, there is a consequent change in the blood sugar level.

Chromium (Chromium Polynicotinate)

Chromium picolinate is a version of the trace mineral chromium.

Studies show that this dietary supplement may provide benefits including weight loss, lowered serum cholesterol and glucose, burned fat, and build muscle. The human body produces Picolinic acid apparently to improve the cellular uptake of trace metal ions. Scientists demonstrated that several minerals in the picolinate form are many times better assimilated than other forms of the same mineral.

Chromium Polynicotinate is an equally effective assimilated form of chromium that some researchers suggest may have more benefits for some conditions than does the picolinate form.

Both forms of chromium reduce high serum glucose levels that contribute to aging via a destructive process known as glycosylation, also called nonenzymatic glycation, in which glucose molecules bind to proteins and interfere with their function.

People with diabetes have a highly increased rate of protein glycosylation and this plays a major part in their increased risk of atherosclerosis and many other diseases. For many with diabetes, chromium enhances the ability of insulin to lower serum glucose levels.

The National Academy of Science recommended range is 50-200 mcg per day.

The high incidence of adult-onset diabetes suggests to some doctors that many people should supplement with small amounts of chromium. Many doctors recommend a daily intake of 200 mcg. In general, a pregnant woman needs an additional 5 mcg of chromium per day (over the RDA) and a breast-feeding woman needs about 10 mcg more per day than other women in her age group.
